Overview of Research - Research - ABIM Foundation

he ABIM Foundation is dedicated to advancing medical professionalism, physician leadership, science-based medicine, and health care of the highest quality. We conduct research to advance the state-of-the-art of measurement, and the science of data driven improvement. Our research has been published (pdf) in JAMA, Health Affairs and other well-respected academic health care journals.

The objectives of the ABIM Foundation's research are to:

  • Assess and assure that professional efforts, such as certification and Maintenance of Certification, are meaningfully related to evaluating and improving care
  • Motivate physicians to participate in quality improvement
  • Consider how professional strategies to evaluate and improve care, such as certification and Maintenance of Certification, can be integrated with the efforts of others in the complex and dynamic health care environment
  • Promote physician professionalism

The challenge now is to ensure that clinicians and policymakers can easily find out what we do know, support research to answer what we do not know, and promote change in the health care system that will continue to narrow the gap between what we know and what we do.
