PHILADELPHIA, March 27, 2006 – As part of its ongoing program
to foster the use of measurement and quality improvement processes
by physicians to improve care, the ABIM Foundation has developed
a DVD that explains the attitudes of physicians who were early
adopters of Quality Improvement (QI) and what impact QI has had
on their practices. Copies of the DVD, “Putting
Quality Into Practice: Physicians in Their Own Voices,” are
available free of charge.
The ABIM Foundation, in collaboration with the National Committee
for Quality Assurance (NCQA) and the Commonwealth Fund, interviewed
39 physicians in solo and small group practices who have successfully
introduced systematic quality improvements in their practices. Each
physician describes how they have been able to improve patient
care and increase efficiency by implementing quality measures,
many of which are relatively simple and easy to put into place.
"Putting Quality into Practice (PQIP) is a collaborative project
with the Commonwealth Fund and NCQA to improve the clinical performance
of physicians. Twenty organizations, including certifying
boards, medical societies and accreditation organizations, are
members of the PQIP Consortium. ."
“Our mission is to advance medical professionalism and physician leadership in quality assessment and improvement, and this DVD illustrates how the use of data and feedback has already had a positive impact on many physicians’ practices,” said Christine K. Cassel, MD, President and CEO of the ABIM. “We encourage other physicians to follow the lead of these early adopters and introduce quality improvement initiatives to enhance the care they provide to their patients.”
“The ABIM Foundation Putting Quality into Practice program is an inspiring testimonial to what practicing physicians can do and are doing to improve the quality of care of their patients,” said John Tooker, MD, MBA, FACP, Executive Vice President and CEO of the American College of Physicians. “As the national QI movement matures, this program should be an important resource to all those who wish to participate.”
Helen Darling, President of the National Business Group on Health, commented:
“This DVD should be shown to all practicing physicians and those in training to reveal the power of data, electronic support tools and the commitment of visionary physicians.”
