Sheila Leatherman is a Research Professor at the School of Public Health, The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Professor Leatherman is an elected member of the Institute of Medicine of the National Academies (2002), the National Academy of Social Insurance (1997), and is an Honorary Fellow of The Royal College of Physicians in the UK (2005). She conducts quality of care research and policy analysis internationally and has worked for the past ten years in the U.K. evaluating the effect of health reforms on the NHS. She was appointed by President Clinton in 1997 to the President's Advisory Commission on Consumer Protection and Quality in the Health Care Industry, chairing the sub-committee to develop a national strategy for quality measurement and reporting.
She is coauthor of a series of chartbooks on quality of health care in the US and UK. She has a broad background in health care management in State and Federal health agencies, as chief executive of an HMO, and as senior executive of United HealthGroup. She is a Senior Advisor to The Nuffield Trust and to The Health Foundation in the UK, and serves on the Board of Directors of the international organization Freedom From Hunger.
