David Hellmann is a nationally recognized leader in internal medicine and rheumatology. His expertise in rheumatology and his teaching skills have led him to be invited almost every year to give the major lectures at ACP and specialty society annual meetings. He continues to publish timely and cutting edge clinical research in this field, with articles in both JAMA and Annals within the past month.
In addition, he is one of the most successful medical education administrator/leaders in our field. As Chair of the Department of Medicine and Associate Dean at Johns Hopkins Bayview Campus, he leads the part of Hopkins that is renowned for the quality of clinical care, the excellence of clinical teaching, and new advances in health services research.
Dr. Hellmann's served as a Governor of the American College of Physicians, which has been an important part of his effectiveness during his service as an ABIM director (2000-2006). He made major contributions to the quality of the debate on critical issues, and was always able to both raise potentially contentious issues in a constructive way, and to help lead a discussion to resolution. He was selected to serve for two years on the Executive Committee. Dr. Hellmann was elected to the ABIM Foundation Board of Trustees in 2007.
