Agency for Health Care Research and Quality (AHRQ)
The AHRQ Innovations Exchange program is designed to accelerate the development and adoption of innovations in health care delivery, particularly in improving safety, effectiveness, patient-centeredness, efficiency and equity of care. A searchable database includes case studies and tools to improve health care delivery.
American Academy of Family Physicians
TransforMed assists primary care practices with implementing the patient-centered medical home model. Their resources include webinars, a social networking site for physicians implementing patient-centered medical homes and information on their Patient Experience Assessment Tool.
American Academy on Communication in Healthcare (AACH)
AACH's Doc.com is an interactive, Web-based learning resource for health care communication. It offers more than 40 interactive online modules and more than 400 videos showing communication competencies. Free demonstration modules are available.
American College of Physicians (ACP)
The ACP Center for Ethics and Professionalism current projects focus on end-of-life care, managed care ethics and professionalism issues such as physician-industry relations. The Center performs advocacy and outreach efforts, develops position papers on current topics, case studies that explore common ethical dilemmas of patients and physicians, educational programs and resources.
American Council of Graduate Medical Education (ACGME)
Through its Outcome Project, the ACGME is increasing emphasis on educational outcome assessment in the accreditation process. The ACGME Outcome Project website provides resources for teaching and assessing professionalism.
American Medical Association (AMA)
The AMA’s medical ethics resources include the AMA Code of Ethics and its Virtual Mentor. Virtual Mentor is an interactive, Web-based forum for analysis and discussion of ethical and professional issues that medical students, residents and young physicians encounter during their training.
The Arnold P. Gold Foundation
The Arnold P. Gold Foundation's mission is to perpetuate the tradition of the caring doctor by emphasizing the importance of the relationship between practitioner and patient.
The Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC)
The AAMC's Integrating Quality (IQ) Initiative helps its member medical schools and teaching hospitals identify, implement and sustain organizational performance improvement. It includes resources on integrating quality improvement, finding effective leaders and promoting mission-centered work culture.
Institute on Medicine as a Profession (IMAP)
The Institute on Medicine as a Profession Media Library contains media presentations, videos, documents, citations and data related to IMAP's work. Visitors can search, filter and download items from this library.
- IMAP’s Web-based curriculum "Promoting Change at AMCs and other healthcare organizations,", offers a comprehensive guide to the issues surrounding conflicts of interest, medical professionalism and best practices for the management of physicians’ relationships with industry.
- IMAP’s research team has compiled the Conflicts of Interest Best Practices Toolkit, including case studies of health care organizations with innovative and effective policies for controlling conflicts of interest. These materials are relevant to a wide and varied audience with any interest in understanding and/or teaching conflicts of interest in medicine.
- The IMAP Education and Training Initiative supports the development of clinically oriented advocacy curricula within medical education and/or residency training programs. Selecting three sites annually for the Education and Training Initiative, IMAP makes curricula from grantees’ projects available.
Institute for Healthcare Improvement (IHI)
IHI has tools for implementing quality improvement and improving patient safety available. Its purpose is to support a wide variety of efforts by health care professionals to make systematic improvements in the quality of the health care they provide.

IHI Open School is an interprofessional educational community that gives students the skills to become change agents in health care. Their resources section includes activities for IHI Open School Chapters, videos, case studies and many other resources in topics such as quality improvement, patient safety and error disclosure. The IHI Open School also offers online courses that are free to students, faculty, deans, and residents. Health professionals can access the courses by purchasing a subscription. Continuing education credits are available.
- The IHI Triple Aim seeks to improve the health of the population, enhance the patient experience of care (including quality, access and reliability) and reduce, or at least control, the per capita cost of care. Among its initiatives is the Appropriate Use of Specialty Services, which is highly relevant to the Physician Charter's commitment to just distribution of finite resources.
- The IHI Improvement Map is a free interactive, web-based tool designed to bring together the best knowledge available on the key process improvements that lead to exceptional patient care.
Institute for Patient and Family-Centered Care (IPFCC)
IPFCC’s website includes many profiles of organizations that have implemented patient and family-centered care. The IPFCC also makes a free download of specific assessment tools available.
John A. Hartford Foundation
The John A. Hartford Foundation’s Geriatric Interdisciplinary Team Training (GITT) Initiative website features a Team Fitness Test, Team Observation Tools and case studies to help organizations implement GITT.
National Board of Medical Examiners (NBME)
NBME’s Assessment of Professional Behaviors Program brings a standardized approach to the support of professionalism and related skills. The program addresses ACGME core competencies and Liason Committee for Medical Education and Joint Commission requirements, and provides formative, multisource feedback on 23 observed behaviors.
National Committee for Quality Assurance (NCQA)
The NCQA’s site includes information on the Physician Practice Connections® - Patient-Centered Medical HomeTM recognition program, which assesses whether physician practices are functioning as medical homes.
National Physicians Alliance
The National Physicians Alliance “was founded to restore physicians' primary emphasis on the core values of our profession: service, integrity and advocacy.” Membership is open to all physicians who have graduated from a medical school accredited by the Liaison Committee for Medical Education or who hold a license to practice medicine in the United States. NPA's website includes resources on health care reform and other topics.
National Quality Forum (NQF)
NQF’s National Priorities Partnership is a collaborative effort of 32 major national organizations, who have identified the following six priorities as those with the greatest potential to eradicate disparities, reduce harm, and remove waste from the American health care system: Patient and Family Engagement, Population Health, Safety, Care Coordination , Palliative and End-of-Life Care and Overuse.
Physicians for Human Rights
Physicians for Human Rights “mobilizes health professionals to advance health, dignity and justice, and promotes the right to health for all. Harnessing the specialized skills, rigor and passion of doctors, nurses, public health specialists and scientists, PHR investigates human rights abuses and works to stop them.” Resources include a library and advocacy toolkit.
Physicians for Social Responsibility
Physicians for Social Responsibility is a non-profit advocacy organization that is the medical and public health voice for policies to prevent nuclear war and proliferation and to slow, stop and reverse global warming and toxic degradation of the environment. Their site features publications and resource guides for clinicians and patients.
Relationship-Centered Health Care
Relationship-Centered Health Care focuses on improving health care relationships. Their resources include an annotated bibliography on relationship-centered health care.
