Choosing Wisely Campaign

choosing wisely logoChoosing Wisely is part of a multi-year effort of the ABIM Foundation to help physicians be better stewards of finite health care resources. Originally piloted by the National Physicians Alliance through a Putting the Charter into Practice grant, nine medical specialty organizations, along with Consumer Reports, will identify five tests or procedures commonly used in their field, whose necessity should be questioned and discussed. The resulting lists, which will be released in spring 2012, will spark discussion about the need—or lack thereof—for many frequently ordered tests or treatments.

Choosing Wisely continues the Foundation’s work in advancing the principles and commitments of the Physician Charter, including the just distribution of finite resources. Learn more about Choosing Wisely at www.ChoosingWisely.org.

2011 ABIM Foundation Forum - Choosing Wisely: The Responsibility of Physicians, Patients and the Health Care Community in Building a Sustainable System

Principles Guiding Wise Choices offers a broad view of how physicians—along with patients, hospitals, health systems, the medical education and training system, medical groups and health policy organizations—can engage in the effort to provide higher quality care that acknowledges our society's finite health care resources. They were developed through a series of workgroups and meetings convened by the ABIM Foundation.

Task Force on Managing Resources

The goal of this task force is to develop recommendations about ways to engage physicians in the management of health care resources, while preserving the health and safety of their patients. It was created in response to the continued extraordinary growth in health care spending, and in light of the Physician Charter’s call for physicians to act as stewards of society’s health care resources.
