The focus of the 2010 ABIM Foundation Forum: Transforming Medical Education and Training: Meeting the Needs of Patients and Society is on developing a social compact for medical education and clinical training that is needed for a high-performing, evolving health care system.
The goals of the Forum include:
- Gain a shared understanding of the implicit social compact between the public and the institutions that support, conduct and oversee medical education and training. What are the societal expectations for educating the physican workforce?
- Assess whether current training environments prepare physicians to work in 21st century high-performing practices. What gaps in skills and professional values exist among physicians entering the workforce? What gaps in skills and professional values exist among faculty who educate and train those physicians?
- Develop strategies to catalyze rapid, transformational change in medical education and training environments, consistent with the social compact. How can we harness internal and external forces to create transformational and, ideally, sustainable change?
Outcomes of the 2010 Foundation Forum details various activities that occurred as a result from this meeting.
